I was assembling modular furniture in the garage when my junior weather observers came running to warn me of the impending storm. I saw hail was in the forecast and with about 20 minutes to spare we used a 15" x 15" piece of white styrafoam 1/2" thick that came with the furniture packaging and covered it with a single layer (except overlap) of cheap Kroger aluminum foil from the kitchen (green box) of unknown thickness using electrical tape to secure it. These were the only supplies we could find on short notice. The winds were blowing NNE and the hail came twice for about 30 seconds each time about two minutes apart. We may not have seen the hail in our scrubby yard, but it was quite apparent on the concrete patio, however, due to the warmth before the storm and standing water on the patio (0,30" in 30 minutes), it did not last long. The entire event happened sometime between 2:10 and 2:40 PM. Most of the hail was larger than rice sized, but none larger than a pea. If you offered a food choice between rice and pea, I would have selected acini de pepe as I felt most pieces were about 3/16". For future reference, I will not place the next hailpad in the grassless area where the pool was last year - the pad got quite muddy! We will save it for a few weeks if anyone wants it. |
