Hail Report Information
Station Number: CO-LP-21
Station Name: Durango 5.4 W
Date: 7/23/2004 4:50 PM
Submitted 7/23/2004 7:58 PM
Taken at registered location: True
Notes: Hail began at about 4:50 PM (+/- 2 min) and rose to peak intensity in the next 2 min. Peak intensity lasted about 2 – 3 min. and then tapered off to no hail. Total hail duration about 10 min. Rain began 1-2 minutes before hail began. At peak intensity, precip. was mostly hail. Hail accumulation on grassy areas was visible, and a wooden deck was solidly covered. Widely scattered areas still had traces of hail at 7 PM (2 hours after the storm). There was relatively little wind or lightning with the storm.Hailstones ranged up to one-half inch in diameter (Longest dimension on irregular shapes) Most hailstones ranged from 1/4 to 3/8 inches in size. (Measured after the storm) The majority of the hailstones were white, spherical with no white hailstones larger than 3/8 inches. Most of the larger stones were elliptical or irregular in shape with a tendency to be white at one end and clear at the other. A few hailstones were entirely clear ice. Hailstones did not exhibit any obvious signs of layering. The thunderstorm moved from WNW to ESE with the center passing north of the station. One half hour after the storm passed, scattered ground accumulations of hail were still visible for a distance extending one mile to the east of the station. Beyond that there was no sign of hail and observers in Durango (5.4 miles east of the station) reported no hail. CB Mammatus pouches were present after storm passed. Lightner Creek which drains areas 1 to 4 miles NE of the station showed no unusual stream flows one to two hours after the storm. The Animas River, which includes drainage areas further north, turned a little muddy one to two hours after the storm. The USGS stream flow station at Cedar Hill, NM (on the Animas River south of Durango) shows a 120 cu. ft./ sec. blip that is a result of the storm. Precip at station was 0.26 inches. (Another 0.29 inches was measured for the early morning storm.) As of 7:45 PM it is dark to the NW with the La Plata Mtns. obscured by precip. Stay tu
