I saw hail in rain about 2 pm at the VA Hospital 4 blocks away. When I arrived home at 2:45 I found hail covering the grass (touching each other, but not overlapping by much), with almost all pea-sized and mostly white. Since it probably fell at the same time as 4 blocks away and was 45 min old, I did not rate many characteristics except that it was white, but I think it was hard, too. I did not go around and look for dents in cars. There was no hail remaining on hard surfaces. The raingauges at 2:45, when it was slightly raining, showed 0.28" in the funnel assembly and 0.34" in the open cylinder. I think the angle of rain was not from the west or south, as my windows were open and it was not wet inside. (I do have typical bungalow eaves.) No hailpad out (it is hard for me to reach the ground). |
