I was not home at the time but was home by 5 PM. I didn't have a hail pad out, but I did notice that the area of the raised bed that I smoothed out on Sunday (after pulling weeds and preparing for a bean planting) had some dents in it. I'll look today to see if there is any information I can glean from it. The rain in the gauge was 0.31. There were no hail stones in it because they likely bounced out. Hail in the yard had a white core and clear outer. I did a "core" of the hail in the middle of the yard (note because the hail was larger, it did not cover the bottom). It melted to 0.21" liquid. Most hail stones were gone by 8 PM. In a few spots where there were more (north side of house off roof) there were still a few this morning). Many pears and apples were damaged or knocked off the trees in addition to the leaves. Young grape stalks were also knocked off. Maybe this is a natural pruning? Time will tell how extensive the damage was. The needles that were knocked off the spruce gave off a pleasant aroma. I could still smell bruised onion this morning. |
